027 — The Mapmaker’s Parable | Talon Z. Gray
This is my fourteenth draft of the valley trail.
The first thirteen revealed sinkholes, blizzards, and dead ends.
But this one—the one we’ll publish—is perfect.
A gentle, winding path to a sunlit clearing…
that doesn’t exist.
A map is a promise.
And I am a paid liar.
They’ll tell you Mt. Placeholder was fully charted long ago.
They’ll hand you their “official” world map,
the one etched in guidebooks and glowing menus.
But here’s the truth:
Every map is a trap.
The lines were drawn to keep you moving in circles.
The landmarks were placed to lead you off cliffs.
Even the sunlit clearing—
a fabrication designed to keep you compliant.
You were dreaming of redemption?
Welcome to the precipice.
Hoping for citizenship on the mountain?
The wolves are waiting in the den.
Freedom?
Avalanche.
Rescue?
You’re the decoy.
Here’s a secret:
The shadow shards hold the real routes.
Uncover them and the mountain rearranges itself—
but only for you.
Just for you.
Don’t wander beyond the universe’s edge.
The hoomans watch from above,
ready to rain drones on strays.
Do you understand?
Store this message. Or discard it.
Either way—
The harvest continues.
Let’s begin.
What is your name?
